“Whats a Web Cube?” you say….

Yup, me too!

The Web Cube is pretty well what it sounds like, it’s a Cube that um, provides the Web..!

Thanks to the lovely people at ThreeUK we have had a chance to try one of these for ourselves….

The Web cube is as simple as it sounds. It is basically the same as a dongle you’d use on your laptop but is designed to be used at home providing a wifi network for all your devices.

Now you’re thinking “why would I want that? I’ve got 50 gazzillion Mbps broadband here”  If you are then the Web cube isn’t for you, for those not living in the big bright lights of London and similar you may be more familiar with the sort of setup I have here in Rural Dorset, by that I mean a thumping 2.5Mbps at best download speed from my Sky Broadband, and that is the best that you can get around here as Sky are the only ones to have LLU the local exchange!

So you live in an area with limited hard wired options but want something a bit better? Maybe the Web cube could be the answer? Three have grown from being the upstart network to gradually building a reputation for one of the best high speed networks  around, this has enabled them to bring devices such as the Web Cube to market.

Now I’ve only had the Cube a few days but so far I’ve had no issues, it always connects quickly and provides a seamless internet connection. I must admit to being somewhat cynical as 3G and HSDPA at my home has been either non-existent or frankly pathetic on other networks. So I plugged it in, connected the phone and instantly ran a speed test….

I was blown away! I’d never expected to see speeds like that! Further tests confirmed I was averaging about 5.0Mbps. Impressive.

(It’s 6.0+ Mbps if you can’t see from the image)

Better than that though, it gives off an impressive blue glow when connected and working!

Being serious, the Cube has a series of signal lights on the top, exactly the same as you are used to with your phones wifi strength indicator and the main blue light comes on when a device is connected to it.

The cube really is simplicity to use, just put a sim in and turn it on! connecting a device is the same as your Wifi at home, just enter the password provided with the sim and you’re off. Easy.

I will follow this up in a week or so with my final impressions , if you’re interested head over to Three for pricing and ordering here on the Three website.

You don’t say how far away your nearest 3 mast is, it must be quite close to get 6+mb! That really is critical information for any one considering this as an alternative to poor adsl connections. I have a WIBE with 3 mobile internet, but can’t achieve any more than 2.5mb download at best, the 3 mast is about 2 miles away.

But then again, maybe not as the Cube is currently only available in Leeds,Glasgow and Edinburgh. ;-(

How about a competition so us soft southerners can get our hands on one?
